Rishiri Island, Hokkaido
Off the northeastern tip of Hokkaido at Wakkanai is a volcano which rises out of the Sea of Ohkotsk and captures among its steep ridges out of the air the dry crystals precipitated in the super-cooled air. The result is a remote, dramatic landscape which experienced back-country skiers have called world-class.
Accessible during the winter only by a single daily flight when the weather allows, Rishiri is the most remote deep powder experience available in Japan.

Air / Train Access
During winter, Rishiri Island is served by one flight per day from Sapporo’s Okadama Airport. The 45 minute flight flies in the afternoon. A ferry also runs from Wakkanai on the far northern tip of Hokkaido, but it is much more subject to weather cancellations in rough winter seas than the daily flight.
