Resorts in Japan

Japan is home to more than 500 mountain areas to ski and snowboard. They range from European/North American style mega-resorts to tiny local villages. In this section we introduce you to some of Japan's best.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido is Japan's northern most island and is known among powderhounds to have the most abundant and driest in the world. The region has over 117 ski resorts but also plays host to over 1200 festivals and events including February's Sapporo Snow Festival, where hundreds of snow and ice sculptures line the streets.

Tohoku

The northern end of Japan's main island of Honshu, the Tohoku area spans 6 prefectures and boasts some of the best skiing and snow Japan has to offer. Famous for its pristine powder skiing without the crowds, off the slopes, the region is famous for its cultural heritage hosting traditional festivals and with many hot spring choices throughout.

Central Japan

Host of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, central Japan is the bedrock of the Japanese ski industry including the Hakuba Valley, Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen resorts. Just a train ride from Tokyo, it is the most accessible of areas in Japan.
